NEW Arcadia Publishing Columbia College, SC 9780738506890 Campus History Trade P In 1854, founders of the South Carolina Methodist Conference established an all-female school in Columbia, South Carolina. Known originally as Columbia Female College, today’s Columbia College has suffered and survived hardships, faced challenges, and flourished during its almost 150-year history as an institution of higher learning. The college has succeeded in its mission to provide quality liberal arts education for women and has become one of the leading establishments of its kind in the South. Included within these pages are vintage images of the school throughout the past century and a half. The ever-changing physical attributes of the college–classrooms, administration buildings, ornate gates, and dormitories–as well as the students and faculty who helped shape the college into what it is today are commemorated here in both word and image. From the trials of campus fires and the closing of the school during the Civil War to the triumphs of American artist Georgia O’Keeffe’s tenure and the receipt of honors such as the prestigious Hesbergh award, Columbia College has emerged as a well-respected school for women. NEW Arcadia Publishing Belchertown State School, MA 9781467105019 Images of Amer In the first decade of the 20th century, the state of Massachusetts established itself as a leader in the education of individuals with disabilities. The third state school for the feebleminded was built in rural Belchertown, in the western part of the state. Opened in 1915, Belchertown State School would eventually encompass almost 900 acres of land and would become the largest employer in town. For nearly 60 years, the state school educated individuals with disabilities who were otherwise excluded from public education, training the “residents” to become independent members of their families and of society. The model was a success until reports of abuse and neglect began to surface, culminating in the landmark 1972 Ricci v. Greenblatt case, which ultimately led to the state school’s closure in 1992. The state school’s rich history, maintained and curated by the late Donald LaBrecque, chronicles the rise of special education and developmental services and the ultimate collapse of the state school system. Mercy High School of Michigan
Mercy High School of Michigan Some 15,000 women are graduates of Mercy High School in southeastern Michigan. Since 1945, when it opened as Our Lady of Mercy High School in northwest Detroit, its graduates have embodied the school motto: “Women Who Make a Difference.” In 1965, the school moved from its original building on the Mercy College campus to a mid-century modern building 11 miles away in the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills. The school was established by the Sisters of Mercy, a Roman Catholic religious order with 6,200 sisters worldwide. Among its graduates are luminaries in the arts, medicine, sports, business, government, and military service. The Mercy Marlins sports teams have won numerous state championships in swimming, basketball, hockey, softball, lacrosse, golf, and other sports. This book commemorates Mercy High’s 75th anniversary and reflects the impact of “Mercy Girls” on their communities, country, and around the world.

NEW Arcadia Publishing University of Baltimore, MD 9780738505947 Campus History Since its founding in 1925, the University of Baltimore has become one of Maryland’s premier educational institutions. Originally organized as a practical solution for working men and women seeking a college degree, the institution developed rapidly-the School of Law and the College of Business Administration, begun in the founding year as evening professional schools, were joined by a day division and, in 1937, a junior college. Finally, in 1961, the university began its College of Liberal Arts to meet the demand for a relatively low-cost, liberal arts college education. Containing over two hundred black-and-white photographs from the archives of the Langsdale Library, University of Baltimore explores the school’s history, from its birth in October 1925 to the present day, the eve of its seventy-fifth anniversary. NEW Arcadia Publishing The Buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright at Florida Southern C
NEW Arcadia Publishing The Buildings of Frank Lloyd Wright at Florida Southern C As small Florida Southern College embarked upon an ambitious building program in the 1930s, the serendipitous arrival of Frank Lloyd Wright transformed the future of the school. Pres. Ludd Myrl Spivey was a leader with limitless imagination, and he realized the virtue in bringing an architect of Wright’s renown to Lakeland. Wright’s first visit to the lakeside campus was in 1938. He envisioned a grand 18-unit “Child of the Sun” campus, where buildings would grow from the Florida sand into the light. The buildings are especially suited to the landscape and are connected thematically by a series of covered walkways Wright called the Esplanade. Over the next 20 years, 12 of these unique structures were constructed at Florida Southern, and today they comprise the world’s largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work. The campus attracts thousands of visitors annually, and preservation and restoration projects are ongoing. The Florida Southern College Architectural District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
