When the fully self-sustaining Napa Asylum opened in 1875, it quickly filled to capacity and became home to many people suffering from mental illness, alcoholism, grief, and depression. In 1924, Napa Asylum was renamed Napa State Hospital to reflect changes in the medical model and treatments for psychiatric patients. Covering the first 100 years of the hospital’s history, this unique book tells the story of the institution and the people for whom it served as employer. This volume chronologically documents the evolution of the institution, beginning with its humble origins during the early 20th century. In 1906, the Russell Creek Association of Baptists purchased 10 acres of land, which became the campus of the Russell Creek Academy. Elementary and secondary school classes were offered in September 1907, as was training for teachers.Campbellsville Junior College was established in 1924. Despite the school becoming a college, elementary and secondary school students continued to be educated there until 1941. Campbellsville College began offering a four-year higher education program in 1959. The institution achieved university status in 1996. Today a majority of the students attend classes on the 75-acre campus located in the heart of Campbellsville, Kentucky. Evanston Hospital School of Nursing Evanston Hospital was founded in 1891, followed by the school of nursing seven years later. Evanston Hospital School of Nursing (EHSN) provided education at a reasonable cost while the students provided care to patients in between studies. In its first 50 years, the school graduated 1,157 nurses, with the first class of two graduating in 1901. EHSN, like other diploma programs, flourished until educational cost escalated, technology boomed, training methods evolved, and a conversation about where and how nurses should be educated began. After 86 years of training nurses, EHSN closed. Using historical images and recollections, Evanston Hospital School of Nursing: 1898-1984 highlights the marketing, education, curriculum, and values of EHSN as well as the students’ experience and dormitory life.
