Perkins School for the Blind Founded in Boston in 1829, Perkins School for the Blind was the first school of its kind in the United States. Perkins pioneered education for people who are deafblind when seven-year-old Laura Bridgman became the first deafblind person to learn language, in 1837. Fifty years later, alumna Annie Sullivan used the same methods to teach Helen Keller, the deafblind Perkins student who became one of the foremost humanitarians of the twentieth century. The school also pioneered the first kindergarten for the blind and the first training programs for teachers of the blind and deafblind. Perkins School for the Blind pays tribute to this groundbreaking institution and its legacy of establishing education programs that bring hope and dignity to more than forty thousand people with blindness and deafblindness worldwide.

Gannon University, Pennsylvania, Campus History, Paperback In 1933, Bishop John Mark Gannon founded Cathedral College to give the boys of Erie, Pennsylvania, a chance for a better life. Initially a branch campus of Villa Maria College, which it would merge with 56 years later, the community college moved from a dilapidated building next to the bishop’s residence in 1941 to one of the most elegant structures in downtown Erie, the Strong Mansion. The school was then renamed the Gannon School of Arts and Science. Three years later, the school began awarding bachelor’s degrees and became Gannon College. Today, Gannon University is a highly ranked liberal arts university that offers nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees to students from around the world. Gannon has been a prominent feature in downtown Erie for more than 80 years, and in 2015, another city became a part of Gannon history with the opening of the university’s first branch campus in Ruskin, Florida.

Originally intended to accommodate 500 residents, by the end of 1854 the almshouse had admitted well over 2,200 paupers, thus necessitating future expansion. Although the virtue of the institution was called into question in 1883 by Gov. Benjamin Butler, who decried Supt. Thomas J. Marsh, the almshouse would continue to serve the destitute of the commonwealth for years to come. The name would later be changed to Tewksbury State Hospital to reflect the inclusion of the mentally ill, the sick, and those suffering from infectious disease as patients. Today, the hospital remains operational in providing specialized care in the Thomas J. Saunders Building while also serving as host to various governmental agencies and community organizations like the Public Health Museum on its historic campus. Although many of the early structures were demolished in the 1970s, the Tewksbury State Hospital remains an active institution brimming with architectural beauty and a rich public health history.
