Lost Austin, Texas, Images of America, Paperback Known to some as “Capitol City,” “River City,” and “Groover’s Paradise,” Austin is a diverse mix of university professors, students, politicians, musicians, state employees, artists, and both blue-collar and white-collar workers. The city is also home to the main campus of the University of Texas and several other universities. As Austin has grown to become more cosmopolitan, remnants of its small-town heritage have faded away. Austin’s uniqueness–both past and present –is reflected in its food, architecture, historic places, music, and businesses. Many of these beloved institutions have moved on into history. While some are far removed in the mists of time, others are more recent and generate fond memories of good times and vivid experiences. Images of America: Lost Austin explores, through the collections of the Austin History Center and others, where Austinites once shopped, ate, drank, and played.

Williamson College of the Trades
Williamson College of the Trades Williamson College of the Trades was founded in 1888 by Quaker businessman and philanthropist Isaiah V. Williamson, whose objective was to provide financially disadvantaged young men with a useful trade. Located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, the school accepted its first students in the fall of 1891. Then, as now, the young men received free room, board, and tuition while dividing their day between the classroom and the shop. In 2015, the institution changed its name from Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades to Williamson College of the Trades, but its mission has never changed. Students still live on campus for free and are required to report for morning inspection, attend daily chapel service, and maintain a professional appearance at all times. Williamson has remained relevant in a changing world while still maintaining its core values of faith, integrity, diligence, excellence, and service. Despite changing times, Williamson College of the Trades has stayed true to those values and Isaiah V. Williamson’s legacy.

Westminster College
Westminster College During the mid-1800s, a small band of farsighted men convened to form a college for “the mental and moral training of youth.” They also pledged that “no person will be refused admission on account of Color, Caste or Sex.” This was a bold move on the eve of the Civil War. As Presbyterian Church representatives, the founders selected the name Westminster Collegiate Institute. In 1852, Westminster became the first integrated and unrestricted coeducational college in the country. Today it is one of America’s most admired small liberal arts colleges. Westminster remains on the cutting edge of teaching and learning while valuing the interaction between faculty and students. The New Wilmington campus has been home to successive generations of scholars who have gone on to excel ina wide range of endeavors. Westminster College serves as a tribute to the school’s past and present students, preserving the images of their specialmemories and favorite places.

Greene County, Virginia, Images of America, Paperback
Greene County, Virginia, Images of America, Paperback Greene County covers less than 160 square miles, the western portion of which became part of Shenandoah National Park in 1935. The Blue Ridge Mountains have played an important role in its history. Travel between the eastern Piedmont and the Shenandoah Valley through Swift Run Gap has been a defining feature for thousands of years, beginning with the Native American tribes. By 1736, most of the land was taken up in patents from the British Crown. A thriving village that became Stanardsville developed close to the mountains and was a coach stop on the “Richmond Road.” During the 19th century, many small hamlets with schools, stores, and churches grew up in the mountains and at the crossroads. In 1838, the county was formed from the western part of Orange County, and its Jeffersonian courthouse was built. One century later, the Shenandoah National Park changed the face of the county. Today, over a million visitors to the park each year enjoy the time they can spend there.

NEW Arcadia Publishing York College of Pennsylvania, PA 9780738555164 Campus His The history of York College of Pennsylvania begins shortly after the Revolutionary War. The college traces its lineage directly to three ancestral schools. The foundation was York County Academy, an English classical school chartered in 1787. The academy merged in 1929 with York Collegiate Institute, founded in 1873. Under one roof, both schools survived the Great Depression. In 1941, the charter was amended to allow two years of college-level courses and the institution became York Junior College. With an influx of war veterans, York Junior College quickly outgrew its downtown building and in 1956 acquired land for a new campus. By 1968, it was a four-year baccalaureate-granting college with a new name. Through vintage photographs, York College of Pennsylvania celebrates the journey of the school from its humble beginnings to national recognition.
