NEW Arcadia Publishing Belchertown State School, MA 9781467105019 Images of Amer In the first decade of the 20th century, the state of Massachusetts established itself as a leader in the education of individuals with disabilities. The third state school for the feebleminded was built in rural Belchertown, in the western part of the state. Opened in 1915, Belchertown State School would eventually encompass almost 900 acres of land and would become the largest employer in town. For nearly 60 years, the state school educated individuals with disabilities who were otherwise excluded from public education, training the “residents” to become independent members of their families and of society. The model was a success until reports of abuse and neglect began to surface, culminating in the landmark 1972 Ricci v. Greenblatt case, which ultimately led to the state school’s closure in 1992. The state school’s rich history, maintained and curated by the late Donald LaBrecque, chronicles the rise of special education and developmental services and the ultimate collapse of the state school system. Mercy High School of Michigan

Posted July 14, 2026 by & filed under .

Mercy High School of Michigan Some 15,000 women are graduates of Mercy High School in southeastern Michigan. Since 1945, when it opened as Our Lady of Mercy High School in northwest Detroit, its graduates have embodied the school motto: “Women Who Make a Difference.” In 1965, the school moved from its original building on the Mercy College campus to a mid-century modern building 11 miles away in the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills. The school was established by the Sisters of Mercy, a Roman Catholic religious order with 6,200 sisters worldwide. Among its graduates are luminaries in the arts, medicine, sports, business, government, and military service. The Mercy Marlins sports teams have won numerous state championships in swimming, basketball, hockey, softball, lacrosse, golf, and other sports. This book commemorates Mercy High’s 75th anniversary and reflects the impact of “Mercy Girls” on their communities, country, and around the world.

African Americans of Orangeburg County

Posted July 14, 2026 by & filed under .

African Americans of Orangeburg County Images of America: African Americans of Orangeburg County explores the lives of African Americans in Orangeburg and some of the surrounding towns during the 20th century. Orangeburg has been called “the little town with the big history”–and that it is with over 30 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the beautiful Edisto Memorial Garden, which is known all over the state. This unique town, which is also the county seat, is the location of four colleges, including two historically black colleges. These schools and the church communities were driving forces during desegregation in the turbulent 1950s and 1960s. South Carolina State University was the site of the Orangeburg Massacre, where three students were killed in 1968. It has taken years for this town to heal from the tragic events that occurred; however, it has more than survived all the struggles and marches to become a better community. This book highlights various achievements and contributions from African Americans who have helped Orangeburg prosper.

The Webb School of Bell Buckle

Posted July 14, 2026 by & filed under .

The Webb School of Bell Buckle The Webb School of Bell Buckle is the oldest continuously operating boarding school in the South. In Culleoka, Tennessee, in 1870, William Robert “Sawney” Webb Sr. founded the school, and classes were taught in the basement of a Methodist church. Webb’s brother, John Maurice, joined as coprincipal in 1873. Having family ties to the town of Bell Buckle, the Webbs moved the school to its permanent home in 1886. With Sawney known for his drive and discipline and John known for his “saintly character, deep learning, and the gift of imparting it,” according to Vanderbilt University professor emeritus Edwin Mims (Webb School class of 1888), the brothers were a powerful force in education and later became founding members of the Southern Association of Independent Schools. In addition to 10 Rhodes Scholars, the school has produced governors, university presidents, diplomats, CEOs, actors, artists, and several award-winning authors. The Webb School celebrates its sesquicentennial in 2020.

Belhaven College, Mississippi, Campus History, Paperback

Posted July 14, 2026 by & filed under .

Belhaven College, Mississippi, Campus History, Paperback Plagued from its beginnings by fires, financial hardships, and the dismal days of war, Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi, has persevered into the twentyfirst century to become a leading liberal arts institution with one of the South’s most diverse small college populations. In this delightful journey into the school’s storied past, vintage photographs illuminate the beloved campus, early classes, annual events, and prolific leaders that friends and alumni of Belhaven will recall with fond memories. Founded in 1894 by Dr. Louis T. Fitzhugh, Belhaven College for Young Ladies occupied a large residence and spacious grounds formerly belonging to Colonel Jones Hamilton and named after his ancestral home in Scotland. Just seven months after it opened, the college burned to the ground on February 7, 1895. New buildings were constructed, and the college reopened in the fall of 1896. Fires would also wreak havoc on the school in 1910 and 1927; the school would go on to affiliate with the Presbyterian Church in the early part of the century; and the post-Depression years would find Belhaven facing an uphill struggle to continue operating with minimal funds. Shaken but not defeated, Belhaven continued to grow and with each passing decade gained more national recognition, whether through its renowned music program, its high standards of academic excellence, or the introduction of intercollegiate sports following the school’s first admittance of male students in 1954. Although the years have brought numerous changes and Belhaven now rests on the cusp of the computer age, the school’s commitment to traditional Christian values still permeates every aspect of a student’s education.

Brissette O.S.M., director of the Sorrowful Mother Novena, originated both Chicago’s “Nurses Day” and Chicago’s Nurse Parade in 1949. The purpose of the parade was twofold: to give the nurses a “day of glory” and to also encourage others to join this undermanned, noble, and caring profession. The first Chicago Nurse Parade (1949) had two floats, four bands, and included many nurses marching in capes. The 10-year anniversary parade (1958) had 4,000 marching uniformed nurses, over 30 bands, and over 100 decorated floats representing nearly all Chicagoland hospitals and schools of nursing. In 1958, over 100,000 spectators lined Jackson Boulevard to honor nurses in what would be the final parade.
