Evanston Hospital School of Nursing

Posted July 14, 2026 by & filed under .

Evanston Hospital School of Nursing Evanston Hospital was founded in 1891, followed by the school of nursing seven years later. Evanston Hospital School of Nursing (EHSN) provided education at a reasonable cost while the students provided care to patients in between studies. In its first 50 years, the school graduated 1,157 nurses, with the first class of two graduating in 1901. EHSN, like other diploma programs, flourished until educational cost escalated, technology boomed, training methods evolved, and a conversation about where and how nurses should be educated began. After 86 years of training nurses, EHSN closed. Using historical images and recollections, Evanston Hospital School of Nursing: 1898-1984 highlights the marketing, education, curriculum, and values of EHSN as well as the students’ experience and dormitory life.

NEW Arcadia Publishing Central Connecticut State University, CT 9780738501604 Ca Central Connecticut State University, established as the first public institution of higher education in Connecticut and credited with being the sixth normal school founded in the United States, will celebrate its sesquicentennial in 1999. Originally New Britain Normal School, it occupied two downtown sites from 1850 to 1923, when it was moved to its present site. In 1933, the Normal School became the Teachers College of Connecticut. It struggled through the 1930s and the war years before beginning its significant growth in the 1950s. By 1959, it had become a multi-purpose college and its name was changed to Central Connecticut State College. During the 1960s, the college tripled in size, and the enrollment approached 8,000 full-time students. With this growth came profound changes in practices and student behavior. In 1983, the further development of programs gave the college university status. Central Connecticut State University proposes to represent not only the physical growth of the institution but also to document the changes in attitudes, ideals, and styles during the 150-year period. NEW Arcadia Publishing Rosewood Center, MD 9781467106504 Images of America Trade The first institution of its kind in the state of Maryland, the Rosewood Center opened its doors in 1888, serving individuals with disabilities for over a century. Rosewood was born out of humanitarian ideals with a focus on education and training, but it was later plagued with overcrowding, staff shortages, and a number of scandals. By the mid-20th century, it had declined to a point where, for many residents, it offered little more than the most basic custodial functions. This book explores Rosewood’s history, from its optimistic founding, later struggles, and reform attempts to its ultimate closure in 2009. It also traces the larger story of the treatment and care of the disabled in the United States and the deinstitutionalization movement that is still being debated to this day. Today, a handful of extremely dilapidated structures scattered across a hillside in Owings Mills, Maryland, are all that remain of the Rosewood Center.
