University of California, Davis
University of California, Davis More than a century ago, the University of California established the University Farm at Davis to showcase the achievements of its thriving College of Agriculture and to train students in the practical arts of farming. Since enrolling its first students in 1908, UC Davis has evolved into a world-class university offering a full spectrum of studies. UC Davis research over the decades has had far-reaching impacts, including innovations in viticulture and enology that have improved winemaking around the world. Colorful traditions like Picnic Day celebrate the depth and breadth of this historic institution and show off its handsome campus. Most pictures in this book come from the university archives, with some images from the McCurry and Eastman collections and others taken by the distinguished photographer Ansel Adams.
Gannon University, Pennsylvania, Campus History, Paperback
Gannon University, Pennsylvania, Campus History, Paperback In 1933, Bishop John Mark Gannon founded Cathedral College to give the boys of Erie, Pennsylvania, a chance for a better life. Initially a branch campus of Villa Maria College, which it would merge with 56 years later, the community college moved from a dilapidated building next to the bishop’s residence in 1941 to one of the most elegant structures in downtown Erie, the Strong Mansion. The school was then renamed the Gannon School of Arts and Science. Three years later, the school began awarding bachelor’s degrees and became Gannon College. Today, Gannon University is a highly ranked liberal arts university that offers nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate degrees to students from around the world. Gannon has been a prominent feature in downtown Erie for more than 80 years, and in 2015, another city became a part of Gannon history with the opening of the university’s first branch campus in Ruskin, Florida.

NEW Arcadia Publishing Tewksbury State Hospital, MA 9781467106528 Images of Amer Opened on May 1, 1854, the State Almshouse at Tewksbury was a venture by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to provide economical care for state paupers. Originally intended to accommodate 500 residents, by the end of 1854 the almshouse had admitted well over 2,200 paupers, thus necessitating future expansion. Although the virtue of the institution was called into question in 1883 by Gov. Benjamin Butler, who decried Supt. Thomas J. Marsh, the almshouse would continue to serve the destitute of the commonwealth for years to come. The name would later be changed to Tewksbury State Hospital to reflect the inclusion of the mentally ill, the sick, and those suffering from infectious disease as patients. Today, the hospital remains operational in providing specialized care in the Thomas J. Saunders Building while also serving as host to various governmental agencies and community organizations like the Public Health Museum on its historic campus. Although many of the early structures were demolished in the 1970s, the Tewksbury State Hospital remains an active institution brimming with architectural beauty and a rich public health history. William C. Quantrill’s Missouri guerillas raided Lawrence, Kansas, on August 21, 1863, and killed 180 men and boys. Women lost husbands, children lost fathers, and fathers lost sons. Every one of the 2,500 residents lost either a loved one, a neighbor, or acquaintance. A few left town, but most survivors were determined to remain and remember; not to “wink out.” Newcomers brought industry and innovation. The University of Kansas, 1866, and Haskell Institute, 1884 (now Haskell Indian Nations University), grew into major institutions. Lost Austin, Texas, Images of America, Paperback
Lost Austin, Texas, Images of America, Paperback Known to some as “Capitol City,” “River City,” and “Groover’s Paradise,” Austin is a diverse mix of university professors, students, politicians, musicians, state employees, artists, and both blue-collar and white-collar workers. The city is also home to the main campus of the University of Texas and several other universities. As Austin has grown to become more cosmopolitan, remnants of its small-town heritage have faded away. Austin’s uniqueness–both past and present –is reflected in its food, architecture, historic places, music, and businesses. Many of these beloved institutions have moved on into history. While some are far removed in the mists of time, others are more recent and generate fond memories of good times and vivid experiences. Images of America: Lost Austin explores, through the collections of the Austin History Center and others, where Austinites once shopped, ate, drank, and played.
