Napa State Hospital, California, Images of America, Paperback Napa, because of its natural beauty and optimal conditions for “moral treatment,” was chosen as the second site for a state hospital to ease overcrowding in Stockton Asylum. When the fully self-sustaining Napa Asylum opened in 1875, it quickly filled to capacity and became home to many people suffering from mental illness, alcoholism, grief, and depression. In 1924, Napa Asylum was renamed Napa State Hospital to reflect changes in the medical model and treatments for psychiatric patients. Covering the first 100 years of the hospital’s history, this unique book tells the story of the institution and the people for whom it served as employer. Known locally as Imola, this beautiful site became an integral part of the community.

Evanston Hospital School of Nursing Evanston Hospital was founded in 1891, followed by the school of nursing seven years later. Evanston Hospital School of Nursing (EHSN) provided education at a reasonable cost while the students provided care to patients in between studies. In its first 50 years, the school graduated 1,157 nurses, with the first class of two graduating in 1901. EHSN, like other diploma programs, flourished until educational cost escalated, technology boomed, training methods evolved, and a conversation about where and how nurses should be educated began. After 86 years of training nurses, EHSN closed. Using historical images and recollections, Evanston Hospital School of Nursing: 1898-1984 highlights the marketing, education, curriculum, and values of EHSN as well as the students’ experience and dormitory life.

Marsh, the almshouse would continue to serve the destitute of the commonwealth for years to come. The name would later be changed to Tewksbury State Hospital to reflect the inclusion of the mentally ill, the sick, and those suffering from infectious disease as patients. Today, the hospital remains operational in providing specialized care in the Thomas J. Saunders Building while also serving as host to various governmental agencies and community organizations like the Public Health Museum on its historic campus. Although many of the early structures were demolished in the 1970s, the Tewksbury State Hospital remains an active institution brimming with architectural beauty and a rich public health history. Greene County, Virginia, Images of America, Paperback Greene County covers less than 160 square miles, the western portion of which became part of Shenandoah National Park in 1935. The Blue Ridge Mountains have played an important role in its history. Travel between the eastern Piedmont and the Shenandoah Valley through Swift Run Gap has been a defining feature for thousands of years, beginning with the Native American tribes. By 1736, most of the land was taken up in patents from the British Crown. A thriving village that became Stanardsville developed close to the mountains and was a coach stop on the “Richmond Road.” During the 19th century, many small hamlets with schools, stores, and churches grew up in the mountains and at the crossroads. In 1838, the county was formed from the western part of Orange County, and its Jeffersonian courthouse was built. One century later, the Shenandoah National Park changed the face of the county. Today, over a million visitors to the park each year enjoy the time they can spend there.
