Mercy High School of Michigan Some 15,000 women are graduates of Mercy High School in southeastern Michigan. Since 1945, when it opened as Our Lady of Mercy High School in northwest Detroit, its graduates have embodied the school motto: “Women Who Make a Difference.” In 1965, the school moved from its original building on the Mercy College campus to a mid-century modern building 11 miles away in the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills. The school was established by the Sisters of Mercy, a Roman Catholic religious order with 6,200 sisters worldwide. Among its graduates are luminaries in the arts, medicine, sports, business, government, and military service. The Mercy Marlins sports teams have won numerous state championships in swimming, basketball, hockey, softball, lacrosse, golf, and other sports. This book commemorates Mercy High’s 75th anniversary and reflects the impact of “Mercy Girls” on their communities, country, and around the world.

African Americans of Orangeburg County Images of America: African Americans of Orangeburg County explores the lives of African Americans in Orangeburg and some of the surrounding towns during the 20th century. Orangeburg has been called “the little town with the big history”–and that it is with over 30 sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including the beautiful Edisto Memorial Garden, which is known all over the state. This unique town, which is also the county seat, is the location of four colleges, including two historically black colleges. These schools and the church communities were driving forces during desegregation in the turbulent 1950s and 1960s. South Carolina State University was the site of the Orangeburg Massacre, where three students were killed in 1968. It has taken years for this town to heal from the tragic events that occurred; however, it has more than survived all the struggles and marches to become a better community. This book highlights various achievements and contributions from African Americans who have helped Orangeburg prosper.

Pres. Ludd Myrl Spivey was a leader with limitless imagination, and he realized the virtue in bringing an architect of Wright’s renown to Lakeland. Wright’s first visit to the lakeside campus was in 1938. He envisioned a grand 18-unit “Child of the Sun” campus, where buildings would grow from the Florida sand into the light. The buildings are especially suited to the landscape and are connected thematically by a series of covered walkways Wright called the Esplanade. Over the next 20 years, 12 of these unique structures were constructed at Florida Southern, and today they comprise the world’s largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright’s work. The campus attracts thousands of visitors annually, and preservation and restoration projects are ongoing. The Florida Southern College Architectural District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Brissette O.S.M., director of the Sorrowful Mother Novena, originated both Chicago’s “Nurses Day” and Chicago’s Nurse Parade in 1949. The purpose of the parade was twofold: to give the nurses a “day of glory” and to also encourage others to join this undermanned, noble, and caring profession. The first Chicago Nurse Parade (1949) had two floats, four bands, and included many nurses marching in capes. The 10-year anniversary parade (1958) had 4,000 marching uniformed nurses, over 30 bands, and over 100 decorated floats representing nearly all Chicagoland hospitals and schools of nursing. In 1958, over 100,000 spectators lined Jackson Boulevard to honor nurses in what would be the final parade. It was appropriate that the U.S. Navy’s pioneer training station and principal graduate college be established at Newport. Known as “The City by the Sea,” Newport, Rhode Island, has a long history of maritime activity. As far back as the colonial period, Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay have always been safe and deep havens for naval as well as commercial shipping. In 1883, Commodore Stephen B. Luce established the Naval Training Station on Coaster’s Harbor Island in Newport, which became the forerunner of the modern recruit stations for enlisted men in the U.S. Navy. The next year, in 1884, Luce established the Naval War College, the first professional naval education center of its kind in the world. It soon became the U.S. Navy’s premier institution for professional studies of warfare, international law, and statesmanship relating to war and peace. Among others, Luce brought to the college Capt. Alfred Thayer Mahan, the naval historian whose book, The Influence of Sea Power Upon History, 1600-1783, and other works influenced naval thought throughout the world.
